Sunday 8 April 2007

Anna Politkovskaya was murdered six months ago. Today a "rally" (as reported by Reporters Without Borders) or a "ceremony" (as reported by multicultural broadcaster the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS)) was held in Moscow to mark the day. Politkovskaya's murder has been blamed on her investigation into crimes committed by authorities in Chechnya. The Guardian says that Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen warlord, is "suspected of involvement in her murder".

The leader of the Russian Democratic Party Yabloko, Grigory Yavlinsky, spoke at the event.

Politkovskaya's posthumous book A Russian Diary was published recently.

SBS reported that 12 journalists had been killed in Russia since 2002.
